Gen Mar

About

Gen Mar is the result of the dream of Claudio de Martis, who just missed winning the 3/4 ton cup with “Serbidiòla” in 1983. He then decided to surround himself with a group of like-minded sailing friends, with the same desire to win, so that each one, with their experience, could contribute to the creation of a winning boat. The job of designing “Gen Mar” was given to Alessandro Vismara. In 1988, just a week after its launch, “Gen Mar” won the Italian Championship Class IV IOR at Marciana Marina, and was awarded the “boat of the year”. It was also the best italian boat at the world championships.

Project

“Gen Mar” is a boat that was designed to be long, fast and with small number of sails, conceived for maximum performance in mediumlight winds, without large variations in intensity – the same conditions expected at the Championships in Marciana. For this purpose, the displacement was made lighter compared to the average for the other boats, saving a few hundredweight, and the hull was designed to be as “clean” as possible, with no forcing points as dictated by rating rules. The result is a “round” boat, with a bow that is not forced and with faired buttocks, and appendages studied to reduce water friction.

Characteristics

The detail characterising “Gen Mar” is the very wide and low cockpit, designed using ergonomic criteria to allow the crew the best possible working conditions, while maintaining the most efficient position for the trim. “Gen Mar” is the boat that marked the start of a modern era for the IOR.
